Big Sisters of Rhode Island creates and supports one to one mentoring relationships between responsible, caring women of diverse backgrounds and girls in the community who are in need of extra support & guidance in their lives.

Encourages cultural strengths
Uses mentors
Gives girls time to speak out
Helps girls to develop trusting relationships with other girls and women
Educates girls about their own health, including mental health, nutrition and healthy sexuality
Allows girls a voice in program design
Provides community service
Interrelates with schools, educators, and a (K-16) school curriculum

Girls in the program range in age from 7 to 18, and include older girls who are transitioning out of the Rhode Island Girls' Training School. Case management services are provided to the girls & families who are involved in the program.

Other current programs include Life Choices, an educational/support group for middle-school-aged girls, done within the schools as well as in the community. Another program is a school based mentoring program where female high school students are paired with local elementary and/or middle school girls in a mentoring relationship.

The program is statewide and includes a branch office in Newport on 4 Farewell Street, (401) 846-4406.
